William was born in 1821. He was the son of John Magee and Marianne Ker.
He was educated at Kilkenny College and entered Trinity College Dublin Nov. 9, 1835, aged 14, Sch. 1838, B.A. 1842, B.D. 1854, D.D.1860, Donnellan Lect. 1865,
William Connor Magee was ordained Deacon 1844, Chester ; Priest 1845, Tuam; Curate St. Thomas's, Dub., 1844-9, Curate St. Saviour's, Bath., 1849-51, Asst. Min. Octagon Chapel, Bath, 1851-60, Prebendary of Wells 1859-61, Minister of Quebec Chapel, London, 1860-61
He was installed as Precentor of Clogher 28 November 1860 (D.R.). He reisgned this Dignity and became Dean of Cork 1864-8, Dean of Chapel Royal 1866-8, Bishop of Peterborough 1868-91, Archbishop of York March to May, 1891.
William married his cousin, Anne Nisbittt Smith, daughter of Rev. Charles Smith, Rector of Arklow, on 14 August 1851

He died of influenza in London May 5, 1891.
