Biography

Flag of Lancashire (adopted 2008)
Mary (Makin) Ashcroft was born in Lancashire, England.

Mary was born on July 20, 1785, in Sutton, Lancashire, England. (Sutton was a township and ecclesiastical parish, in Prescot Parish, Lancashire. The township is entirely within the county borough of Saint Helens). She was the first of at least seven children born to Joseph Makin, a shoemaker, and Jane Mason. She was baptized on July 30, 1785, in Prescot, St Helens, Lancashire. Mary married Joseph Hill on December 30, 1804, in Prescot, Lancashire, England, at Saint Mary Church. The Banns of Marriage had been read on December 16th, 23rd, and 30th. It appears Mary and Joseph had at least three children.

Mary's husband, Joseph, passed away in May of 1821. In August of that same year, Mary remarried. Her new husband was Roger Ashcroft. They were married in Rainford (a Village, township-chapelry, and a sub district of Prescot, about five miles from St Helens). on August 12th. Mary and Roger would have one child, James, in 1825. The date of Mary's death is unknown at this time, but she appears in the 1851 Census of England, as a Widow.
