Lydia Louise Marburger
Lydia was born on 11 July 1849 in Dover, Tuscarawas county,[1] Ohio to Georg Heinrich Marburger and Anna Elizabeth Lauber. Her parents were both born in Germany. Although it appears that they are living in Galena, Jo Davies county, Illinois in 1860,[2] they were not there long before they moved to Bellevue, Jackson county, Iowa when she was young. It was there that she met and married a young man who had been born in Germany named Heinrich Friedrich Christian Rockemann, or Chris for short. He was eight years older than she was on their wedding day, April 15, 1864[3] and Lydia was three months short of being fifteen. Chris and Lydia had three or four children in Iowa before they went to live in the Benton township of Nemaha county, Nebraska, [4]where they had the rest of their thirteen children. One of their older daughters died about age three in 1872, a son died in 1873 at age two and another son died at age less than one in 1887. Anna married in 1883, Lydia married in 1888 and died in 1896, and Christiana married in 1892. In 1900 there are still seven children in their home.[5] Chris died in 1903 and Carrie married in 1907 and died in 1908, After Chris died, Lydia was able to remain on the farm because there were enough children at home to help her run it. In 1910 the three youngest boys were at home.[6] When Lydia died in 1913, those three boys were still at home. Fred married the next month, William the next year. The youngest boy, Louie, was born in 1897, was six years old when his father died, 16 when his mother died and he didn't marry until 1925. Lydia was laid to rest beside her husband of 54 years in the Long Branch Cemetery near their home in Nemaha county.[7]
