Dorothy Nairn Marshall (1900-1992) was born in Rothesay, Bute, Scotland on the 30th January 1900. She was the youngest of 3 daughters of Dr. John Marshall and Jean Binnie.
[1][2]
Her father was a general practitioner on the isle of Bute and the family lived at 7 Battery Place, Rothesay.
[3][4]
She remained living with her parents and shared her father's passion for natural history and spent much time exploring the world around her on the island.
Most years around February or March, they would undertake a holiday to the Mediterranean or North Africa.
[5][6][7]
Her father retired from general practice in 1932 and they moved to Stewart Hall, Rothesay, Bute. It was there that her father died in 1945
[8]
and her mother in 1949.
[9]
She was made a Fellow of the Society of Antiquities of Scotland in 1945.
[10]
Subsequent to this, Dorothy was able to further indulge her passion for archaeology and she travelled all over the world assisting in digs and excavations including Sabratha in North Africa in 1951 and another at Jericho on the West Bank of Palestine in 1952. She acted as Registrar for the excavations at Jericho every year from 1952 to 1958.
[11]
She took a trip from Merida in Mexico to Miami, Florida in 1961, her intended destination being St Augustine, Florida. Her address at this time was given as Kames Garden Cottage, (which is in Port Bannantyne,) Bute, Scotland.
[2]
Nothing more is given on the travel documents but I find it interesting that both the departure and the destination location both had/have active excavations nearby.
She was awarded an M.B.E. in the New Years Honours in 1982.
[12]
She died on the 3rd September 1992 in Rothesay, Bute.
