Biography

"He grew to manhood in Cooper County, Mo., was married there, and most of his family were born there. He was engaged in farming until he moved from Missouri to Tacoma, Wash. in 1890. His first venture there was as a sand and gravel contractor in the days when all the hauling was done by horses, he had four teams, all of which died within days of each other, thus terminating that facet of his career. After this he worked as a cabinet maker and in 1892 began work for the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1899 he moved to Mexico City and was associated with the Mexican Central Railroad until 1912 when he returned to the States, settling in San Antonio, Texas where he worked in carpentry. In 1917 he decided to return to his first love, the soil, and from that time until his retirement in 1941 he was engaged in dairy farming in Roy, Wash. The last years of his life were spent in Tacoma, Wash., where he died Sept 24, 1944." ----Meriwether, p. 73.
