912; S. 3500. Willard E. Martin was a sergeant in Company A, Tenth Regiment Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted August 11, 1862, and was honorably discharged July 5, 1865, having served nearly three years. The medical records show him treated while in service for chronic diarrhea and dysentery. He established a claim under the general law and is pensioned at $17 per month for chronic diarrhea and resulting disease of rectum and vertigo and desease of heart - results of sunstroke. He was first pensioned at $12 from October 10, 1889; increased to $17 from September 9, 1891. Application for further increase was rejected July 29, 1910. When claimant was last examined by a Pension Bureau board, at Owatonna, Minn., June 1, 1910, he was rated five-eighteenths for disease of heart and twelve-eighteenths for chronic diarrhea. The board did not recommend any increase, but stated that claimant was thin and emaciated and muscles are flabby, and he walks haltingly with a cane. Evidence filed with this committee is to the effect that claimant is incapable of performing manual labor by reason of chronic diarrhea and resulting disease of stomach and rectum, heart disease, and vertigo, resulting from sunstroke. He is about 74 years of age and in need of additional relief for the support of himself and family, all in poor health. Acting in this case as we have in similar cases, the committee recommend increase of pension to $24 per month. (Pensions and increase of pensions for certain soldiers and sailors of the Civil War, etc. February 20, 1912. Date: 1912-02-20, Serial Set Vol. No. 6124, Session Vol. No.A, 62nd Congress, 2nd SessionS. Rpt. 384)

Civil and Indian Wars Veteran Dies The rapidly diminishing body of Civil War veterans and Indian fighters has lost another member in the death of Willard E. Martin, 84 years of age. Funeral services were under the auspices of Stanton Post No. 55, G. A. R., in the Calvary Baptist church. Martin served with the Minnesota volunteers during the Civil War, and took part in the scouting expedition into the South Dakota Badlands after the band of Sioux that in 1862 massacred a number of whites in that region.
