James was born in 1912 in Maryport, Cumberland, England. He was the son of Thomas Martin and Annie Emmerson Heskett.^[1]

When James was about 26 he married Margaret Sweeney Carley on 20 July 1938 in Stafford, Staffordshire, England.^[2][3]

In 1939 James (age about 27) was living in Staffordshire, England.^[4]
