John married Mary Frances Marett
In the 1850 census John (age 30, blacksmith) was in Township 5 Pickens, Pickens, South Carolina, United States.[1] In the 1860 census J (age 40) was at 2nd Regiment, Pickens, South Carolina, United States.[2]

In the 1870 census J (age 50, mill wright) was the head of household in Center Township, Oconee, South Carolina, United States. He was married with nine children.[3] In the 1880 census John (age 60), Mill Wright, was the married head of household in District 208, Banks, Georgia, United States.[4]
He passed away (aged 70–71) about 1887, likely in Homer, Banks, Georgia, United States. Col J. Clark Mason was mentioned on a memorial in Homer Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Homer, Banks County, Georgia, United States with a death date of 3 September 1887.[5]

He was a Colonel of a SC Militia Regiment in 1863 but this regiment was later disbanded and he entered the 7th SC Cavalry Regiment and was with Gen'l Lee's army at Appomattox but he came out with Pres Davis without surrendering and was paroled at his home as Federal Cavalry was camped near his home when he arrived there.
