Wednesday September 12, 1923 MASON Benjamin (died 10/09/1923) One of the oldest residents of the district, in the person of Mr Benjamin MASON, died at Fairfield Park, Hanson South, on Monday. The old gentleman, who was in his 91st year, enjoyed good health to the end, and died in harness. He went for a barrow of wood, and on returning sat on the barrow exhausted. Mr McCOWAN noticed that he looked ill, and on going to him inquired if anything was wrong. He put his hand on his breast, and said he had a heart weakness. Mr McCOWAN immediately removed him inside, and gave him a drink, but he failed to revive, and died in a few minutes. The late Mr MASON was born on the Upper Murray. His mother was one of the first white women born in Australia, having been born at Parramatta. In 1854 the deceased gentleman went with his brother (the late R J MASON) to Fairfield Park, and he has resided there since. On the sale of the property by his brother about 10 years ago, he remained with his sister (Miss Elizabeth MASON) in the old home, and the kindness of Mr McCOWAN was such as is only very rarely extended to old people. He is survived by his sister, who has also reached an advanced age. Messrs J Hubert MASON and Jack MASON are nephews of deceased. [Buried Greta cemetery]. Brothers and sisters of Ben MASON (Hanson South) were John MASON (Benalla), Thomas MASON (Rockview, NSW), Mrs NEIL (Deniliquin), Mrs ODWYER (Junee), Mrs T SKELTON (Benalla), and Miss Eliza MASON, Hanson South.
