Merideth C. Masters, City Collector
Merideth C. Masters had his first experience in public office in 1896 when he was elected city treasurer, an office he held for two years. In 1898 he was elected city collector, and was re-elected in 1900. He was to hold this office until his death, with the exception of four years when the office was held by Albert G. Oldham.
Mr. Masters was born February 14, 1833, near Nicholasville, Kentucky. At the age of fourteen he came to Independence with his parents. His first employment was with William and John McCoy in their general store on the southwest corner of the Square.
On May 24, 1860, he married Mis Marry C. Leader, who was born March 4, 1842, the daughter of Jacob Leader, 1838 pioneer. Mr. Leader was a woodworker for forty years with Robert Weston & Company, early-day wagonmaker. Mr. Leader was also a member of the first school board of Independence, and Mary was a schoolteacher. She was graduated with high honors from Miss Tillery's College, the first female college of the town, at the age of fourteen, the youngest of the class.
After their marriage, Merideth and Mary lived on a farm on Westport Road. In 1872 they moved into town where he became a salesman in the store of Jacob May, later known as the Dr. John S. Mott Store, on the south side of the Square.
