Biography

John Matney is a part of US Black heritage.

John Burr Matney, mostly known as John B, was born in March 1875, in Virginia, United States, the son of Alfred Matney and his wife Amanda.

He married Maggie Brown on June 9, 1896, in Petersburg, Virginia,^[1] subsequently having ten known children, five daughters, and five sons:

John was employed as a teamster.

On June 2, 1900, John (25), a teamster, was living with his family in the Maiden Spring district, of Richlands, Virginia. Home at the time were his wife: Maggie (26), a teacher; and their children: 3-year-old Willie; 2-year-old Elaine; and the baby: 4-month-old Arthur.^[2]

John worked as a blacksmith in a coal mine.

On May 3, 1910, John (35), a blacksmith in a coal mine, was living on McDowell Street in the Browne Creek district of Kimball town, West Virginia. Also at home were his wife: Maggie (34), occupation stated as "none"; and their children: 14-year-old Willie, a trapper in a coal mine; 11-year-old Elaine; 9-year-old Arthur; 7-year-old Alfred; 5-year-old Ann; 3-year-old Joseph; 1-year-old Mabel Madelyn; and the baby: 3-month-old Nellie.^[3]
