Biography

Jane was born about 1825 in Louisiana, the daughter of Charles Matthews and his wife, Mary Bruce.

She was married to Sylvarius Rhodes on May 15, 1849 in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. By the following year, Sylvarius, a steam boat pilot, and Jane had established their home in Harrisonburg, and celebrated the birth of their first child. They were attended to by one black 30-year-old female slave.^[1]

Timeline

1850 - United States Federal Census - In the 1850 census, Sylvarius is indexed as Savrius, 28. The census lists his birth as Illinois, although subsequent censuses all use Kentucky as a birthplace. He is living with his wife, Jane, 22, and a newborn child, probably Mary. Also in the household is Margaret Fowler, 27, Born Illinois, and Ann Fowler, 4, born Louisiana. Sylvarius is working as a steam boat pilot.^[2]

1860 - United States Federal Census - In the 1860 federal census, Sylvarius is listed as S. Roads, 45. This is the oldest I find him listed as since this census lists him as being born about 1815 in Kentucky. He is working as a grocery keep. Also in the household are his wife Elizebeth Roads, 30, and children Mary Roads, 10, Charles Roads 6, Rosena Roads, 4 and Hanah Roads, 2. Also in the household are a Charles Roads, 15, born in Louisiana but too old to be a sibling of the other children; Ann Fowler, 15; Harmon Fowler, 11 and J. L. Fotner, 20. Fotner was born in South Carolina.^[3]

1870 - United States Federal Census - In the 1870 census, S Rhodes, 55, is shown living in Harrisonburg, Catahoula Parish, Louisiana with his wife, E.J. Rhodes, 40. Also residing in the home are their children, Charley Rhodes, 16; Rosa Rhodes, 13; Anna Rhodes, 11; Sally Rhodes, 6; and E.C. Rhodes, 2. Daughter M. J. Kiper, 20, and her husband J.E. Kiper are also residing in the home with their son, W.R. Kiper, 1. Sylvarius is a hotel keeper.^[4]

1900 - United States Federal Census - In 1900, George Copeland, 42, is listed as a grocery merchant in Monroe, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. Also in the household is his wife, Sallie A., 35; and children, Walter G., 16; Chas. R., 15; Zaides, 12; and mother-in-law, Jane E. Rhodes, 71.^[5]
