Erastus Allen Matthews Family Bible - 1864

Erastus Allen Matthews' Bible was given to his daughter Lorena Ophelia Matthews Jordan and then to Mary Estelle Jordan Queen. It is now in the possession of his descendant James Sexton who has been generous in providing copies of the pages. This Bible is apx 11 x 15 in size. the back of the inside page is inscribed: E.A. Matthews Texana, Texas AD 1864

Note: Most of the entries on page 4 of the Births were done by E.A. Matthews.

On the death of his youngest daughter (1865) E.A. wrote:

"That merry shout as none I hear No laughing child I see No little arms caress my neck No feet upon my knee No kisses drop upon my cheek Those lips are sealed to me Dear Lord! how could I give my darling up To any but to Thee."

About his wife (1866), he wrote: "Why should we weep for thee, Since thou art gone, Unsullied back to Heaven, No stain upon thy Spirit's purity, No sins to be forgiven."
