Biography

Thomas was born about 1536, the son of Richard Maunsell of Chicheley, and Margaret Fairfax[1].

Thomas obtained a MA at Oxford University in 1554 and was admitted to the Middle Temple as a student in 1557[2].

Thomas married in 1567, Agnes, daughter of John Morton of Oundle, Northamptonshire, and widow of William Everell of the same place[1].

Thomas, gentleman of Chicheley, executed his will in 1581 but failed to give a full date or have it witnessed. He named his wife Agnes and daughter Mary as his executors and despite the shortcomings, they were able to gain probate on 28 January 1582/83 at London. In the will, he mentions his sons John, Thomas and Richard; daughters Elizabeth, Martha and Mary; and his brother John[3].

Thomas passed away in April 1582 and was buried at Chicheley, Buckinghamshire[1].

Regarding his daughters: According to his will: Maria married Mathias Comry, Elizabeth m. __ Petit/Pettitt, and Martha married Henry Edward but records have not yet been found[3][1].

Research Notes

On his mother Margaret Fairfax

I have looked over the Statham evidence. So it is his contention that Margaret married William Sayre and this spouse is now added.

It also makes sense that she would have been previously married as she was not listed for an inheritance based on being an as yet unmarried daughter in her father's will unlike her sisters.

Statham's contention is actually that Margaret married a Richard Maunsell - but not this one. However, he fails anywhere to produce the other couple

He argues from geographical affiliation that the grandson identifies with a more southerly location, but this does not bode well either for Joane's geography either, and I am not sure that we have otherwise established that Thomas had such a daughter.

Further, I have seen other cases in which the parentage of the stepmother is simply accepted without further documentation. Were there issues with the Fairfax Catholic branch that concerned the new Puritan (a greater element of the English rather than Irish branch) ...There seems to have been a bit of a gap between births and baptisms.....

Notes around Thomas' grave seem to follow the traditional Fairfax rather than Potter line

So Statham has introduced a bit of doubt but nothing yet compelling to overturn the traditonal view - as he has done other places.
