Will M. Maupin is best known as a journalist and "newspaper man" in Nebraska.[1]

Will was born in 1863, but whether in Missouri or Illinois is the subject of some debate. (See the Research Notes.) He was the son of Rev. William Taylor Maupin (1832-1911) and Sarah Ann Miller (1831-1893).

The 1870 Census[2] shows him at age 6 in the home of his parents in Harristown Township, Macon County, Illinois.

The 1880 Census[3] shows him at age 16 in the home of his parents in the town of Oregon, Holt County, Missouri.

William married first to Jennie Hammond on 12 Sep 1887 in Kearney County, Nebraska.[4] Their children:

  1. Louis Blaine Maupin (1888–1970)
  2. Sarah Louise Maupin (abt.1890-1892)

Unfortunately, Sarah died when she was only two and her mother died the next year.

William Maupin was 31 years old, when he married his second wife, Charlotte "Lotte" Clifford Armstead, on 13 Oct 1894 in Fremont, Dodge County, Nebraska.[5] Their children:

  1. William Armstead Maupin (1894–Deceased)
  2. Lorena E Maupin (1898–1966)
  3. Dorothy Katherine Maupin (1901–1976)
  4. Richard Metcalfe Maupin (1906–1966)
  5. Margret B Maupin (1908–Deceased)
  6. Charlotte May (Maupin) Kharas (1910-1992)
  7. Jack Robins Maupin (1915-1973)
  8. Dan Wittmer Maupin (1917-1992)

The 1900 Census[6] shows him at age 37 with his wife and two children in Omaha City Ward 6, Douglas County, Nebraska.

The 1910 Census[7] shows him at age 46 with his wife and six children in Lincoln Ward 6, Lancaster County, Nebraska. This census states that his wife has born 6 children with 5 still living.

The 1920 Census[8] shows him at age 56 with his wife and six children in Gering, Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska.

The 1930 Census[9] shows him at age 66 with his wife and four children in Hastings, Adams County, Nebraska.

The 1940 Census[10] shows him at age 75 with his wife, two daughters, a son in law and two grandchildren in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska.

He died in 1948 and is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska.[11]

His career as a "newspaper man" is nicely explained in a Nebraska State Historical Society article; Nebraska Newspaperman Will M Maupin.[12]

Research Notes

Regarding his place of birth:
Every single census cited here, except 1940, shows his birth place to be Illinois. The 1940 Census shows Missouri.[10]

The notes section of the article Nebraska Newspaperman Will M Maupin states that

"At least three of Maupin's obituaries state that he was born in Illinois... Maupin, in two of his earliest autobiographical sketches, stated that his mother left Missouri for Illinois shortly before his birth... However, after 1900 he consistently listed his birthplace as Calloway County, Missouri, and in the Hastings Democrat (February 13, 1930, 4:3) stated that his father "came home on furlough shortly after I was born and moved mother, my sister, and myself to Macon County (Illinois)." Most of his newspaper obituaries and the majority of pertinent primary and secondary sources list his birthplace as Callaway County, Missouri."[12]

Also agreeing with the Missouri birth location is a speech given by his daughter Charlotte (Maupin) Kharas.[13] (Text available here.)
