Note

Note: According to family history, William was of Irish-Swiss descent. By looking at the 1830 and 1840 Twiggs county census, William and Charity had 3 sons. Their names were probably Hugh, Uriah and James. This is based on the fact that each of these men named their children William, Charity, Lucinda, Louisa and Isaac. Further research is needed to prove this connection.
I received an e-mail message from Edward Bugg confirming my belief that Louisa and Uriah were indeed brother and sister. He also supplied me with the names of all ten of William and Charitys children. They are: Uriah, Mattie, Jennie, Hugh, James, Lucinda, Louisa, John T., F. N., and A. L.
William and Charity moved from North Carolina to Georgia between 1806 and 1812. This is based on Uriah being born about 1806 in North Carolina, and the church records of Stone Creek Baptist dated June 28, 1812. Charity is mentioned as joining the church in 1812 and her membership was removed on October 27, 1838.
In the 1833 tax digest, there are 2 William Maxwells listed in Bosticks district. One is a senior and one is a junior. I have not seen any other evidence of 2 men named William Maxwell living in Twiggs County at the same time. Nor any evidence of who were the parents of William Junior. William Maxwell appears on the 1818 Tax Digest, Captain Bullock's District, for Twiggs County. In 1826, he is in Caption Blackshear's District, and in 1853 he is in Smith's District.
On the 1830 census, William is listed as age 40-50, with 3 males, 1 age 5-10, 1 age 10-15 and 1 age 15-20. There are also 5 females, 2 age 0-5, 1 age 5-10, 1 age 15-20 and 1 age 30-40. On the 1860 Twiggs County Mortality Schedule, Charity Maxwell is listed as a widow, indicating that William is deceased and that she died that year.
