Ian Maxwell was born on 6th March 1914 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. He was the eldest son of Alan Maxwell and Rymer McPhillamy.
Ian married Bessie Crisp on 27th April 1938 in Hobart. They had a son, Robert Ian, born in April 1941.On 2nd September 1939, upon hearing the declaration of war, Ian enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy. [1] Together with the entire crew of 645, he went down with HMAS Sydney on 19th November 1941 in the notorious engagement off the Western Australian coast with the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran.
