Biography

  • John H Maxwell

Birth: Nov. 25, 1913 Linton Greene County Indiana, USA Death: Jun. 16, 2014 Billings Yellowstone County Montana, USA

On June 16, 2014, John H. Maxwell completed his long journey of 100 years on this earth. John was born in Linton, Ind., on Nov. 25, 1913, the first child of Ira and Otha Maxwell. While still a baby, he traveled with his family to a homestead near Roberts. His school years were spent in the Bearcreek/Washoe area, graduating from Bearcreek High School in 1932. In 1938, he married Gertrude Lesnik, moving to Billings in 1940. John and Gertrude were married for 63 years until her passing in 2001. John worked as a coal miner at the Smith Mine in Bearcreek and later as a cabinetmaker for Billings Sash and Door. He was shop manager for Midwest Cabinet Co. for 24 years, retiring in 1979. During World War II, he served with the 1054th Army Engineers in the South Pacific. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening, woodworking and just about any project where he could dig in and get his hands dirty. But what he enjoyed most was being husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his son Michael (Jan), granddaughter Holly Wallace (Wayne), grandson John P. Maxwell (Larissa), and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Pearl DeVille, of Billings; and brother, James R. Maxwell, of Prescott, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Rocky Mountain Hospice and the awesome ladies of Westpark Village Pearl Garden for their gentle care of John. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, at the downtown Smith Funeral Chapel in Billings
