Lee was born about 1866 in Conway County, Arkansas. He was the son of Thomas Jefferson Maxwell and Emaline Garman. The birth was probably on the farm of his grandfather, Cyrus Maxwell, and he was most likely cared for by Cyrus' wife (not his biological grandmother) and his father's sisters. His birth seems to have been about three years before his parent's marriage. His mother died sometime around 1870 when he was about age four. In 1876 his father remarried to Catherine Brickey, who had been widowed a year earlier. Catherine was raised on the Brickey farm just north of the Maxwell farm, across the county line in Van Buren County. It is likely that Catherine was well known to the Maxwell household. Catherine brought children of her own to the Maxwell home, children from her first marriage to the household, Nancy and Samuel Brown. These two would be Lee's step-siblings. Sometime in the 1870s, and probably about the time of Thomas' marriage to Catherine, Cyrus Maxwell moved to Carroll County, leaving the farm in the hands of Thomas. Lee became the older half-brother to two more children: Sarah Jane Maxwell in 1877; Thomas F Maxwell in 1879. Lee was fourteen when the family was complete. The seven of them are on the 1880 US Census for Lick Mountain in Conway County, Arkansas. There is no further documentation to be found for Lee after the 1880 census. This may me partially due to confusion as to his first names -- Lee, Anderson, or William. The 1880 and 1870 census records do not agree on his names.
