Biography

Sarah Maria Test May was born about 1838 in Harlow, Essex, England.

Sarah Maria May, daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth, was christened on 12 Aug 1838 in Essex.[1]

In 1851 Maria May (age 16) lived in Ashford, Kent with her father Thomas (59, Smart?), mother Elizabeth (58), and two siblings: Matilda (27) and Fredric (18), as well as three visitors: Elizabeth Cousins (34, Independent), Joseph Cousins (2), and Mary Cousins (4).[2]

In 1861 Sarah M T F May (age 23, House Holder) lived at High Street in Hurst, Berkshire with her mother Elizabeth (67, Fund Holder) and brother Frederick (25, House Holder).[3]

Sarah Maria Test May, daughter of Thomas May, married Henry Ring Crocker, son of Stephen Thomas Crocker, on 17 Sep 1861 in Walton on Thames, Surrey.[4] The marriage was registered in Chertsey, Surrey in the third quarter of the year.[5]

Sarah and Henry had at least seven children:

  2. Lilian Maria Ring (Crocker) Morgan (1866-1955)
  3. Harriet Hall Crocker (c1868-)
  4. Henry Dossetor Crocker (1869-1874)
  5. Daniel Robert D Crocker (1871-1873)
  6. Thomas Marcus Crocker (1872-1950)
  7. Lionel Augustus Roland Crocker (1874-)

Sarah was born in India, Lilian was born in Ireland, Harriet was born in Newfoundland, and then their sons were born in England, so it would seem that Henry's employment took them all over during the first few years of their marriage.

In 1881 Sarah Maria Isl Crocker (age 44) lived at Stanley Grove in Croyden, Surrey with her husband Henry King (44, Clerk (Builders)) and three children: Harriet Hall (13, Scholar), Thomas Marcus (8, Scholar), and Lionel Augustus Rolands (7, Scholar).[6] Daughter Sarah M E Crocker (16, Assistant Bookseller) lived with her aunt Mililan [Matilda] Dosseter [nee May] in Streatham, London; and daughter Lilian Maria King Crocker (15, Scholar) was at boarding school in Hackney, London.

[Unable to locate Sarah on the 1891 census - she most likely lived at Canterbury Road in Croyden with her husband Henry R Crocker (54, Clerk), but he is the only household member that shows up.[7] Daughter Sarah M E Crocker (26, Living on Own Means) was still living with her aunt Matilda Dossetor.]

[Unable to locate Sarah on the 1901 census - her husband Henry Crocker (65, Clerk) was a pauper and living in Croyden.[8] Daughter Sarah M E Crocker (36, Collector Surgical Aid Society) still lived with her aunt Matilda Dossetor.]

Sarah's husband Henry Ring Crocker passed away in 1907.

In 1911 Sarah Maria Crocker (age 76) lived in Tunbridge Wells, Kent with her sister Matilda Dosetor (85) and daughter Sarah Matilda Elizabeth Crocker (46, Collector to Charitable Institution).[9]

Sarah Maria Crocker passed away in 1921, aged 89 years. Her death was registered in Tonbridge, Kent in the last quarter of the year.[10] "CROCKER Sarah Maria Test of 66 Grove Hill-road Tunbridge Wells widow died 8 December 1921 Probate London 25 January to Sarah Matilda Elizabeth Crocker spinster. Effects £146 10s. 4d."[11]
