Texas Ranger and veteran of War of 1812.
John May, U.S. veteran and Texas Ranger, served as a private in the War of 1812. May was born in Washington County, Mississippi in 1797. While still living in Mississippi, he married Elizabeth Bounds in 1828 and had two children. John settled in Shelby County with Elizabeth and their two children between 1834 and 1835, prior to the Regulator-Moderator War. Settling on his land grant of about 1,280 acres near the Willow Grove and Day Communities in Shelby County, John became associated with the Moderators. As a Texas Ranger, John was a friend to the old settlers and helped rid the county of the lawless element that remained from the days of the Neutral Ground Agreement. After giving birth to five children, Elizabeth died, John married Martha A. Davis sometime prior to 1858. They had four children together, including a daughter, Josephine. John married a third time to Elizabeth Haight after Martha died around 1864. They had two sons. It is believed John died around 1873. He is not included in the 1880 census.
He is buried in the John May Cemetery, Center, Shelby County, Texas. [1]
