Biography

Robert Mayne son of William Mayne by his second wife Helen née Galbraith was baptised in the parish of Alloa, Clackmannanshire on 7 July 1728.^[1]

He married firstly on October 24th 1763 Anne, daughter of John Knight at St George, Hanover Square. After her death, he re married to Sarah Otway on June 15th 1775, daughter & coheir of General Francis Otway. They had four sons and .. daughters;

• William, a colonel in the army, late of the Life Guards.
• Robert, in holy orders.
• Charles Otway, a captain in the H.E.I.C. Sea Service
• Helen, who m. John Graham, esq. Of Kernock, son of James, only brother of John Graham of Balquhaple, descended from George Graham of Callendar, second son of William, Lord Graham. By this marriage she had issue: ...

Robert was a banker in Jermyn St., London. His firm first appears in the trade directories in 1770 as Mayne and Needham; in 1774 it becomes Robert Mayne and Co.; & in 1778 Mayne and Graham.

In 1774 Mayne’s brother Sir William Mayne acquired control of both seats at Gatton. Robert Mayne was returned to replace his brother as Member of Parliament for Gatton at a by-election on 27 December 1774.

While in Parliament he was also an important Government contractor: his first contract, 9 Feb. 1776, held jointly with Anthony Bacon, was to victual 6,000 men in America; further contracts followed in 1776, 1778, 1781, and 1782,2 all for victualling troops in America or the West Indies—which suggests that he may also have been a merchant trading to America.

In the 1780 general election he contested Stockbridge and Colchester where he was unsuccessful but was also returned again for Gatton. He supported the Administration of Lord North and is not recorded as having spoken in Parliament.

In 1782 his firm went bankrupt, and on 5 Aug. he committed suicide.
