Biography

In 1860 Thomas lived next door to his Uncle William Mays and two houses from his Dad, David Mays. He was a shoemaker. HOUSEHOLD

1869 Madison County, Tennessee Deed Book 26, page 464 Thos J. Mays To ) Deed R. O. Wiley Regist Jany 8 1869 State of Tennessee Dyer County Know all Men by these presents. That I Thomas J. Mays [b 1836] as heir or legatee of the Estate of David Mays [1811-1862] Decd of the State and County aforesaid for and in consideration of the sum of Five Hundred Dollars paid to me in hand by Robert O. Wiley [Robert Osborn WILEY, 1824-1875, husband of Belinda BROWN, niece of MAYS David] the receipt whereof is by me acknowledged have this day bargained and Sold and do by these presents bargain Sell and convey unto the said R O Wiley his heirs and assign all of my right, title, interest, and claims that I may have or may have hereafter have in the Estate of David Mays, Decd both Real and personal of any and all kinds of lands Moneys Credits or effects that belong or may hereafter belong to said Estate. That I do covenant with the Said Wiley his heirs and assigns that I have a good and lawful right as such heir or legatee to sell and transfer the same as aforesaid And that I will warrant and defend the title of my interest in said Estate to him the said Wiley his heirs or assigns against any and all Claims or demands forever. In Testimony whereof I hereunto set any hand and affix my seal This the Eighth day of January Eighteen Hundred and Sixty Nine Thos J. Mays (Seal) Witness R. O. Wiley State of Tennessee Madison County Personally appeared before me P. C. McCowat Clerk of the County Court of said County the within named bargain Thomas J. Mays with whom I am personally acquainted and acknowledged that he executed the within Instrument for the purposes therein contained. Witness my hand at Office This 8' day of January 1869 P. C. FAG: News has been received in Prairie Grove of the death of T.J. Mays, which occurred at Kenton, Tenn. March 23rd. Mr. Mays will be remembered as the affable and genial shoemaker who for a number of years past worked at his trade in Prairie Grove.
