Biography

Mary Ann McCandless was born on 26 January 1890 in Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland, daughter of Joseph McCandless (1857– ) and Mary Ann Ross (~1864–1940).

Her siblings were:

2. Thomas McCandless (6 November 1884 – 9 April 1917)
3. William John McCandless (about 7 February 1887 – 23 September 1973)

Mary married Robert David Stewart Rennie (4 Dec 1890^[4] - ), the son of James Rennie and Janet Rennie previously McConnell born Stewart (~1849 - 1927^[5]), on 4 January 1909 in Blytheswood, Lanarkshire, Scotland having an irregular marriage by Warrant of Sherriff-Substitute of Lanarkshire^[6].

Their children were:

1. James Wellington Rennie^[7]

Mary was a passenger aboard the Pretorian in May 1910 travelling to Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The manifest records Mary as a 20 year old Widow, however her husband had not died^[8].

In the 1911 census Mary was the married daughter of Joseph Mccandless in Moose Jaw Sub-Districts 100-136, Saskatchewan, Canada.^[9]

Mary (24) married Frederick Cundy (48) (born on 11 March 1866 in Polstead, Suffolk, England; son of John Cundy and Mary Ann (Wisken) Cundy) in 1915 in Saskatchewan, Canada. He died 29 Mar 1933 in Kelowna, British Columbia.^[10]

Although Mary married again in 1915 she was not actually free to do so. Her husband Robert Rennie instigated an action against her which resulted in their Decree of Divorce being pronounced on 18 June 1920^[21].

In 1931 Mary, age 41, was the wife of Fredrick Cundy in Woodlawn, Yale, British Columbia, Canada. She was a Homemaker.^[19]

Mary died on 31 October 1946 in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, aged 56.^[22] Mary was mentioned on a memorial in Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery, Kelowna, Central Okanagan Regional District, British Columbia, Canada with a death date of 31 October 1946.^[23]

Research Notes

The marriage record for Mary Ann's first marriage indicates she married a Robert D S Rennie, compared to this Bio which originally stated she was married to a John Walter Rennie.

The travel record for Mary going to Canada states shes a Widow, however Robert Rennie did not die before her departure. In fact there is a Record of Corrected Entry on the marriage record evidencing a Divorce instigated by Robert David Stewart Rennie whose usual residence was Glenyards, Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire against his wife Mary Ann McCandless whose address was unknown. The Decree of Divorce was pronounced on 18 June 1920.

It should also be noted that her first husband Robert Rennie's birth record is indexed on ScotlandsPeople as "Robert Daniel S Rennie", after viewing the image it could be easy to see either Daniel or David, however given his Divorce records the middle name as David it is likely this is the name he used.
