She appears to have married a Mr. Patterson around 1850, but was widowed shortly afterward.
By the 1860 census Emeline (age 27) was living in Hickory, Mercer, Pennsylvania, United States, with her mother Margaret and her young daughter Kate Patterson.[1]
At age 29, Emeline (re)married Joseph Jordan. The family moved west. In California, they ran an inn.
In the 1880 census Emeline (age 47) was living in San Jacinto, San Diego, California, United States.[2][3]
Emeline was a community fixture who prided herself on her charity work and involvement in local affairs. Helen Hunt Jackson, the author of smash hit novel Ramona had stayed at the Jordan Inn at some point, and Emeline claimed the famous character Aunt Ri was based entirely on her (though less educated and polished than she was). Hunt and many scholars since have contradicted this claim, but it's clear Emeline made this a large part of her identity and it was used as a tourist attraction.
