Biography

GARRED, Lucretia (McClure) 1857-1938 Mrs. Loucretia McClure Garred, 80, member of a prominent Huntington family and a native of this county, died last Friday night at her home after suffering a paralytic stroke earlier in the day. Mrs. Garred had been confined to her bed for 6 months but had been seriously ill for only about 6 weeks.

She was the widow of the late Owen Dyer Garred.

Mrs. Garred was born Dec 16, 1857 at Gallup, Lawrence County, KY. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George C. McClure, pioneer residents of that section whose families were related to Henry Clay. Mrs. Garred joined the Gallup Methodist Church when she was 12 years old. She taught a Sunday school class and organized the first foreign missionary society there. In recognition of her services she was made a life member of the organization.

She was married to Mr. Garred Jun 22, 1876, at the home of her parents at Gallup. The young couple rode to Louisa on horseback. There they established their home. In 1888 they moved to Catlettsburg where Mr. Garred engaged in the timber business. He was a prominent figure during the day of timbering operations when logs were floated down the Big Sandy River and then down the Ohio to the Cincinnati market. The Garreds moved to Huntington in 1900 and bought the Florentine Hotel which they operated for a number of years. Mrs. Garred was a member of the Johnson Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, South. She was a “war mother”. Three of her sons, Alex, David and Vinson served overseas during the World War. Prior to her illness Mrs. Garred was active in the auxiliary of the American Legion. Funeral was conducted Sunday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Frances C. Bogess in Huntington and interment was made in Woodmere Cemetery there. Dr. B. P. Taylor, pastor of the Johnson Memorial Church and Bishop U. V. W. Darlington officiated at the rites. Pall bearers were Lawrence L. McClure, Judge George R. Neffley, V. G. Bryan, Will C. Enslow, George R. Burgess, W. S. Rogers, J. L. Richmond, and Gordon R. Bloss. She is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Boggess, Mrs. Herman E. Gieske and Mrs. E. C. Crowe, 4 sons, Alex L., George C., Vinson D. and David O. Garred of Huntington and 6 grandchildren, Edgar Crowe, John Owen and Lou Addie Gieske, and David Owen, Wyatt Allen and Frank Boggess Garred.
