William Kelso McClurg was born on March 4, 1840, in Chester, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John McClurg and Nancy Jane McIntire, his father, John, was 37 and his mother, Nancy, was 29.
He married Alice Melinda McClurg in 1873. They had 15 children in 28 years. He passed away on July 31, 1910, in Oxford, Pennsylvania, at the age of 70, and was buried there.

William McClurg enlisted as a Private in Company I of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, for 3 years of service. He was discharged on Surgeon's certificate of disability on August 5, 1861, and later served as a Corporal in Company H of the First Delaware Infantry.
