John McColl was born in 1838 in Glencoe, Argyll, Scotland, United Kingdom, son of Archibald McColl (1807 - 1906) and Margaret (Learmond) McColl (1809 - 1889). John was descended from the McColls of Appin.
His siblings were:
John arrived in Port Chalmers, New Zealand aboard the "Alpine" with his parents and six siblings on 12 September 1859. He became a farmer in Brighton.
John married Isabella Baxter (~1851 - 1928) on 11 April 1867 in Green Island, Otago.

John died on 19 August 1926 in Brighton, Otago, New Zealand aged 88 years[1] .
