Biography

James was probably born 03 Dec 1839^[1] in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Daniel McCollum^[1][2] and Melissa Harris.^[1][2]

The census of 22 Oct 1850 records 53 year old Daniel McCollum (Sr.), farmer, in Amwell Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania with Melissa, 50, and children Elias, 21, Caleb 19, Juliann 17, Daniel (Jr.), 13, and presumably twins Demas and James, 10.^[1] See Census, below, for more details.

Research Notes

• Date of Birth: estimate is based his brother Demas' birth date of 03 Dec 1839,^[3] and the assumption that James and Demas were twins since they were both ten in the 1850 census.^[1]
• Date of Death: is unknown. WARNING: FamilySearch has a death certificate for James Mountz McCollum (1839-1925) in Van Wert County, Ohio which a user has linked to parents Daniel and Melissa. This is problematic as the stated birth date of 11 Aug 1839 is not biologically compatible with Daniel and Melissa's son Demas being born on 03 Dec 1839.^[3] Furthermore, the certificate makes no such claim: it does not name either parent of that James. In the opinion of this writer (Hanlon-1154) the certificate is probably for Daniel and Melissa's grandson James McCollum^[4] who married Elizabeth Mount (the son of their eldest, William MCollum).
