Biography

Daniel James McConnelogue was born in the year 1850 in Wilmington, New Castle county, Delaware. He was the second oldest son of John McConnelogue (1817-1902) and Sarah Rogers (1826-1874), both of whom were Irish Catholics. He had an older half-sister from his father's first marriage, who went by several names; Bridget, Theresa Loretta, Retta and his sister, Mary's, descendants knew her as Annie. He had one brother, John M. who was two years older, and three younger sisters, Sarah, Mary and Kate. In about 1851 the family moved from Delaware to Wisconsin, or between the birth of Daniel in 1850 and Sarah in 1852.[1] The entire family was living in Newark township, Rock county, Wisconsin in 1860.[2]

There is some speculation as to why they moved to Wisconsin. If John's father had military service during the Indian uprisings, then he may have been illegible for bounty land. Otherwise, that state may have just been where there were homestead opportunities at the time.

His brother was gone for a few years, including service in the Civil War, but returned by 1870, when the family, minus Retta, was together.[3] The obituary of Dan's sister, Mary, says the the family moved to Hardin county, Iowa in 1871 and the Hardin county history book also mentions that the family moved to Iowa in 1871. See profile of brother, John, for Hardin County History. Another family history says that they moved the year before his mother died and some accounts say that she died in 1873 or 1874, hence the move may have been in either 1871, 1872 or 1873. If it was the latter possibility, Dan would have been under 24 years old and his sisters 22, 20 and 18. His mother, Sarah, died on 14 March 1873 or 1874 when he was 23 or 24 years old.

Dan died at age 26 on 9 September 1876 in Buckeye township, Hardin county, Iowa. His body was buried in St. Mark's Cemetery in Iowa Falls, Hardin county, Iowa, beside his mother. Later his father and his brother John and John's wife, Martha, and their two sons were also buried there. One of his nephews was named Dan after him and was born six years after he died.[4][5]

Note that there are many different spellings of McConneloug, such as McConnelong, McConnelogue, as well as phonetic variations from verbal renumerations, transcriptions from handwritten records, and other sources. These are not considered errors which need to be corrected, and most descendants should recognize variations were frequent and inevitable. Sources below have kept the indexed spelling. Biography above is purposely inconsistent because sources are inconsistent. Surname of profiles here on WikiTree have consistently used the spelling McConnelogue to affirm relationship, but this spelling may have only been the variation that one branch of the family in Nebraska, from which the author and manager of these profiles descended, frequently used.
