John A McCool was born about 1825 in Tennessee, reportedly (but unsourced) in Monroe County, Tennessee. He is believed to be the son of Benjamin McCool (abt.1805-aft.1870) and Margaret Cannon (1801-1860) but further verification is needed.
John married Mary Ann (Luna) McCool (1831-1910) on 16 Jun 1850 in Marshall County, Tennessee.[1] They may have had the following children, but all information needs further verification:
In the 1850 census John (age 25) was in Marshall County, Tennessee with his new wife and sister-in-law.[2]

John did not appear with his wife and children in the 1880 US Census (see Research Notes below). Many researchers have assumed that this means he had passed before 1880, but that may be incorrect. The 1880 Census record states that Mary was divorced, but perhaps she was widowed. Two more McCool children, Minnie C McCool (9; TN) and Loran McCool (6; TN) were included in the 1880 Census as daughter and son of Mary (and John) for the first time.
John's date of death is currently considered unknown; he presumably died in Tennessee.
In the 1880 census Mary A McCool (age 47), Keeping House, was the divorced head of household in District 5, Grainger, Tennessee.[5] It's possible that she was widowed rather than divorced. No information on husband John has been found after the 1870 Census. It's unclear why sons Joseph and John were each identified as "prisoner". No one else on the Census page carries that lable.
