Biography

Helen "Nellie" McCormack was born in 1862 in Ohio to Andrew McCormack and Mary Powers. Both of her parents were Irish. They lived in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. Andrew was a blacksmith. Helen had six siblings - Bridget, Edward, Charles, Mary, Catherine, Agnes and Andrew. In 1880, her Irish cousin James McCormack was living with them^[1].

Helen was still attending school at the age of seventeen in 1880 so must have got the opportunity to finish her education unlike her parents, who likely never were sent back in Ireland. Her elder siblings were both finished school with jobs- Edward was a bookkeeper and Mary was a school teacher.

Helen married Edward Charles Timbers of Cleveland around 1887, when they were both twenty five. They lived for several years with Edward's elderly father Patrick^[2].

In 1910, Helen and Edward lived at 701 East 101st Street in Cleveland^[8]. Edward's occupation was a machinist. Their eldest three children had left school and Edna was a stenographer for an automobile, Charles was a shipping clerk and Lillian was a telephone operator.

Edward Timbers died in 1913 aged fifty, leaving Helen a widow^[9]. All her children were either in their twenties or teens by now, except for her youngest, Eddie, who was ten.

Helen and her children moved to 9215 Columbia Avenue^[10]. By 1920, Edna was a private secretary, Charles was a garage superintendent, Lillian and May were stenographers, Louis was an automobile tester, William was a driver and Eddie was still at school. Over the next ten years, Helen's children moved out and started their own families.

In 1930, it was just Helen and Edna left in Columbia Avenue^[11]. Enda was back working as a stenographer in a factory and taking care of her mother.

Helen died on 3 Feb 1935 aged seventy two in Cleveland^[12]. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery on 6 Feb 1935. ^[13].
