Notes

Thomas was present at the wedding of Catherine McCormick on 9 Dec 1845. Could she be his little sister?

Research Notes

One of the few remaining fragments of the 1841 Census of Ireland includes this family. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1841/Cavan/Tullyhunco/Killashandra/Corradarren/

This is a list of the 41 houses in the Townland of Corradarren, Parish of Killashandra, Barony of Tullyhunco, County of Cavan in 1841. Houses 37, 38, 39, 40 and 41 all have occupants named McCormick.

House 41

The eldest is James McCormick (1761), 80 years old, in house 41. He was born about 1761. He is a widower. He was married twice, in 1796 and 1813, his second (much younger) wife Jane died in 1839 at age 44, making her birth year 1795. She was 18 years old when she married James, who was then 52 years old! He must have been a spry old coot because he fathered his last child, Catherine McCormick, at age 65.

James is living with his unmarried children Mary (26), George (21) and Catherine McCormick (15).

Also present are his married daughter Jane Rudden and Susana Scotts, her contemporary, a visitor.

James, age 27, is shown as absent - a Constable in County Monaghan.

House 40

Next is the home of Thomas McCormick , age 23, and his wife Margaret, age 24, who were married in 1839.

They have a 8 month old daughter, Jane.

Thomas may be a son of James (1761)

House 39

Next is the home of Andrew McCormick, age 35, and his wife Isabella Crawford McCormack, age 21.

Isabella's brother James Crawford, age 16, is living with them.

House 38

Nearby, in house 38 is Jane, (maiden name unknown) age 70. McCormick would be her married name. She is a widow. She was married in 1797. Her deceased husband was presumably about her age so he could be another brother of our James (1761). Jane is shown as the daughter-in-law of James Hix so Isabella (McCormack) Hix, 34, would be her daughter.

Jane is living with her daughter and son-in-law and their 3 year old daughter Jane

House 37

Here resides Catherine (maiden name unknown), age 60, the new widow of John McCormick (78) who died in 1841 before the census was taken. John and Catherin were married in 1799. John could be a brother of our James (1761).

Catherine resides with her unmarried daughter Jane McCormick, age 25.

Commentary

It seems highly probable that this group of five houses was a family group. James (1761), John (1763) and X would likely be brothers and the rest are likely their descendants. This hypothesis is supported but not proven by a dna match, see below.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Are McCormack-1322 and McCormack-1612 the same person? They both show they are married to Margaret McCreedy.
