Gene McCratic, 85, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2008, in a local hospital. He was born on April 25, 1923, in Perry, Oklahoma, the 2nd of 5 sons, to Oliver and Lula McCratic.
Gene graduated from Crozier Technical High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1946 as a corpsman during WW II.
After the war Gene worked for American Telephone and Telegraph Company until 1960. Gene was recalled into the Navy Reserves in 1960 to 1961 as an aviation electronics technician during the Berlin Crisis.
Following his release from the Navy Reserves he went back to AT&T and worked as an Engineer's Associate until he retired in 1983.
On October 10, 1946, in Portland, Oregon, he married Mary J. Keithley who preceded him in death on July 31, 2004.
On May 28, 2006, in Sutherlin, Oregon, he married June E. Fugate.
Gene was a member of the NRA, was very active in the United Way, California State Foster Parents Association, CWA Labor Union and the Board of Directors of the Calapooia Free Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, camping and playing table tennis.
Survivors include his wife, June McCratic of Sutherlin, Oregon; children, Sheryl A. McLord of Lodi, California; Suzzanne McCratic of Gresham, Oregon; Michael McCratic of Murphy, California; Elizabeth McCratic of Livermore, California; Lynnette Ariathurai of Fremont, California; and Joe Saurr of Pueblo, Colorado; brother, James R. McCratic in Tyler, Texas; 11 grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jackie McCratic; niece, Sally Jo, other nieces; nephews and over 30 foster children that they raised over the years.
Gene was also preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Lula; three brothers, Virgil who passed away in 1992, Othello who passed away in 2001 and Robert "Bobby" who passed away in 1991.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 15, 2008, at 4 p.m. at the Calapooia Free Methodist Church. Pastor Stewart Fowler will officiate. Graveside services with military honors provided by the VFW District Honor Guard will be held Monday, August 18, 2008, at 10 a.m. within the grounds of the Roseburg National Cemetery.
