Col. David McCrillis (John-2, John-1) b. in Deerfield, 2 Sept., 1754 Was a revolutionary soldier; m. in C., 29 Feb., 1777, Mrs Susanna (Webster) Webster Moore, b. 9 Nov., 1743, in Salisbury, Mass. She m. first, her cousin, ------ Webster, who was drowned the year following her m. She m. second, Samuel Moore of C., who was a widower, with children and by whom she had three children. She had three daus. by Col. McCrillis. These three families of children and three orphan nieces of Col McCrillis by the name of Coffin were reared in the Moore-McCrillis tavern, of which Col. McCrillis was proprietor for nearly fifty years. He was Maj. and Lieut.-Col of the 11th Regt., N.H Militia, held the commission of Justice of the Peace, and was postmaster of C. He was prominent in the Masonic order. His wife d. 7 Jan, 1822. He m. second, Mary Gerrish, who survived him. He d. 31 May, 1825. [1]
David McCrillis, a blacksmith at Canterbury Center, came to the tavern, after the death of Capt. Samuel Moore, and did a great deal of work about the place. After a time, a little over a year, Widow Susannah [Webster] Moore married him, although he was 12 years younger than she. "Might as well take him, I owe him so much," she is reported to have said. He, of course, conducted the tavern from that time until his death, a period of almost 50 years. They had three children: Betsey, b. Aug 8, 1780, married Nathan Emery, 1798 Hannah, b. Feb 13, 1782, married Jacob Blanchard, 1807 Nancy, b. Aug. 14, 1783, married Nehemiah Clough, Jr., 1800... He died of heart disease but in the full possession of his sense and remarked to the doctor, "It's a great thing to change worlds" He was a tall man and had a pointed nose, a characteristic of the McCrillis family.... [pg104] John S Blanchard of Concord, a grandson of Hannah McCrillis, has the Susannah (Webster-Moore) McCrillis Bible. The leaf of the Moore record is nearly gone but the rest is well preserved. With it is a water-colored sheet, dimmed with age, also giving the family record, probably done by some traveling artist. Col. David McCrillis pointed out to his grandson, John T G Emery (b.1799), the "old Moore cave" where Ensign John Moor first dwelt in Canterbury, which Emery pointed out to Sylvanus C Moore (b. 1830), who pointed it out to the compiler of this Genealogy in 1909. The record of the old Tavern with its fiver proprietors is remarkable. First Samuel Moore from abt 1750 until 1776, then his widow for about 13 months, then Col David McCrillis for 48 years, then Jacob and Nahum Blanchard, father and son, from 1825 to abt 1850, in all a period of 150 years. It sheltered in their declining years and until their death Col. McCrillis's aged father and mother, Scotch-Irish people born 1700 and 1716 respectively, who lived together for 60 years and died at 93 and 92 years of age [2]
