Ireland, Pennsylvania

Biography

Archibald "Archie" McCullough was born in 1829 in County Down, Ireland, a son of William B. McCullough (1800–1876) and Mary Moffat (1795–1880).

In 1832 when Archie was two years old, his parents set sail from Ireland to a new home in America.[1] He later told this story of the voyage: The ship on which the family crossed the Atlantic was destined for Philadelphia. However, after a long and tempestuous voyage, the ship was unable to proceed up the river to that port due to the river being frozen over. Therefore, the passengers disembarked at the port of New York City and proceeded overland to Philadelphia.

The family then set out for Jefferson County, Pennsylvania where father William purchased a tract of five hundred acres, clearing forest for crops and building a small log cabin.

On 13 November 1856, Archie married Margaret Armstrong (1835–1920) at her parents' home in Clarion County. Their children included:

  1. William Wallace McCullough (1859–1941) - married Alice Folsom
  2. Mary Elizabeth "Libbie" McCullough (1860–1932) - married Andrew W. Smith[2]
  3. Martha Jane McCullough (1862–1890) - married Dexter D. McConnell
  4. Alexander Armstrong McCullough (1865–1938) - married Jennie O. Davenport[3]
  5. Hugh Boyd McCullough (1868–1929) - married Anna M. Smith[4]

Archie died at age 89 in November 1918 and was buried in [5][6]
