Biography

Joanna was born in 1876. She was the daughter of John McDonnell and Winifred Murphy.

Sister Mary Francis was a sister of the Visitation convent in Bethesda, Maryland, USA and entered the convent sometime after she completed high school. The 1940 census indicates that she had completed four years of high school. As on the memorial plaque, she would have used the male spelling of Francis for Saint Francis, possibly of Assisi. Most of the family records spell it as Frances because she was a woman, but we have no documents where she wrote it herself.

She passed away in 1957 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Washington, D.C. Her name is listed with many of her fellow sisters on a bronze plaque in that cemetery. ^[1]
