Biography

John McDougald is a part of US Black heritage.

Dr. John Q McDougald was chief gynecologist and superintendent of the Douglass Memorial Hospital in Philadelphia.

John was born about 1869. He was the son of Richard McDougald and Mary Peacock. He was raised in Tatums, North Carolina before heading to Leonard Medical School, which was part of Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. He graduated with his medical degree in 1897, and began practicing medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by 1900.

He married Emma C Nickens in Philadelphia in 1903. They had at least two daughters before she passed away prior to 1920.

John married again in 1926 in Philadelphia to Annie Walker.

John was listed as widowed in the 1930 census, but his obituary mentioned a surviving wife, Anna Lu McDougald, when he passed away in Philadelphia in 1947.

He was buried in Mount Lawn Cemetery in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania.

Research Notes

Unclear if daughter Marie is truly daughter or other family member? She only appears in 1930 census when she is 20 years old. She is not mentioned in John's obituary in 1947 so if she was a daughter she may have passed away by then.
