Research Notes

The sources in this profile raise certain questions. Although he is listed as a son of Steve (sometimes Stewart) McElhany in the 1880 census, he is not listed with this family in the 1870 census when he was about 8. In the 1860 census the family was in Jackson, Clark, Missouri which is a different county than the one where Samuel was born according to his obituary. According to his daughter Charlotte's delayed birth record, she was born to Nellie Mae Lindahl in 1894. This birth took place in a different county from where Samuel lived and also seems to have taken place while Samuel was still married to Maria. No further information was found on Nellie Mae Lindahl than was given in the record. It would seem likely that Maria divorced Samuel sometime between 1900 and 1905 before Samuel's marriage to Ora Richards. There are also inconsistent dates and places for Samuel's birth.
