George McEuen/McEwen was born 13 Mar 1755 in New Milford, Connecticut, the son of John & Elizabeth McEwen. [1] George married on 12 Nov 1783 to Mercy Wright, daughter of Ebenezer Wright and Mercy Leach of Shaftsbury, Vermont. [2]
George built them a cabin in 1784 on his land in HInesburg, Vermont and moved his family from Shaftsbury in February of 1785, driving a yoke of oxen and a sled 100 miles through the snow. The summer of 1785, he built a log house where they lived until the summer of 1797 when they moved into their new two-story brick house -- the first brick house built in Hinesburg. George served as proprietor clerk of Hinesburg from 1787-92, selectman in 1787-88, and town clerk in 1788. He served as captain of the military company formed by the town and was listed as a contributor to the founding of the First Congregational Society of Hinesburg on 26 Nov 1807. George "died of an epidemic" (possibly spotted fever) in 1813, leaving behind six sons and three daughters: [3][4]
