There has been some question of whether Elizabeth's maiden name was McGill or Reynolds. This is due to the death certificate of Elizabeth's daughter Bettie Ferrell in 1913 where it is noted that her mother's maiden name is "Runnels".

Elizabeth McGill's older bothers she lived with when she was young had a different father than she did. Their last name was Reynolds. Likely the person that filled out the death certificate of Bettie Ferrell in 1913 knew that her mother Elizabeth was the sister of the Reynolds men and likely assumed that was her maiden name.

John E. Going’s future wife, Elizabeth McGill is living in Oktibbeha Co, MS with the Reynolds family according to the 1850 US Census. Elizabeth McGill’s mother, Elizabeth Jane Montgomery first married William Reynolds who died in 1817. She then married Elizabeth McGill’s father, James McGill in 1820. Malcolm Reynolds, who she is living with in 1850, is her older brother – half-brother (son of William Reynolds). Elizabeth McGill is daughter of James McGill. Both Malcolm Reynolds and Elizabeth McGill have the same mother - Elizabeth Jane Montgomery (maiden name).

The McGill family is close with the Bell, Montgomery, Reynolds and Wiseman families in Fairfield, South Carolina – all appear to have come over from Northern Ireland in the 1760s-70s – several on the same ship. The Montgomery, McGill, Bell, Wiseman, Watt and Reynolds families intermarried with one another in South Carolina. Many moved to Mississippi and lived near each other. Hugh Bell was son of William Bell and Margaret Montgomery.

John E. Goings and his brother William W. Goyen/Going married into the same family (both into the Montgomery family maternally).

Hugh Bell's daughter Sarah Martha Bell married William W. Goyen/Going (John E. Goings' brother). Elizabeth McGill was daughter of Elizabeth Jane Montgomery.

John E. Goings and William W. Going/Goyen are brothers - sons of Drury B. Going/Goyen. They don't marry sisters, but the women they marry are cousins - both appear to have the same great grandfather Hugh Montgomery the apparent original immigrant of his family.
