John was baptised on 6 April 1871 with his residence stated as Gowerhass. This is recorded in the Parish Registers of St Senan's Roman Catholic Church Kilrush, Diocese of Killaloe, County Clare. Sponsors were Pat Kelly and Mary Kelly[2].
In the 1901 Irish Census, taken 31 March 1901, Daniel McGrath and his wife Mary have a household in the Townland of Gowerhass, County Clare, Ireland. Daniel is identified as the head of the family and his occupation farmer. Five children are identified in the household return: Maggie McGrath 30, John McMahon 28, James McMahon 27, Bridget McMahon 26 and Maria McGrath 20.[3]
John's father, Daniel McGrath, married 70 year old farmer of Gower, died of "senile decay, probably", on 11 February 1907. Maria McMahon, niece of Gower, was the informant[4].
The 1911 Irish Census, taken 2 April 1911, shows the widow Mary McGrath living in the Townland of Gowerhass with her two unmarried son's John and James McGrath, who are farmers. Relative Maria McMahon is also in the household. Mary indicates she was married 35 years and had three children born alive, all of whom still live[5].

Research Notes
1901 Irish Census - children identified as McMahon is a mistake. Original birth registrations show John, James and Bridget were all born with family name McGrath. Also sons John and James are given family name McGrath in 1911 Census.
