Biography

Scottish flag
Margaret (McIlroy) Gunn was born in Scotland.

Margaret McIlroy was born on March 26, 1875 in Glasgow.[1] She was the youngest daughter of Felix McIlroy and Elizabeth McMahon. She was baptised on April 4, 1875 at St Joseph's Church.[2]

Her parents were immigrants from Ireland. They struggled with poor health and a lack of work opportunities, and were sent back to Ireland at least once when attempting to apply for parish relief.[3] By the time Margaret was four years old, they had both died, leaving her an orphan.

Her early years are largely a mystery, she hasn't been found in the 1881 and 1891 census as of yet.

She gave birth to a daughter, Matilda, on May 12, 1894. She was adopted by a Robert and Mary Brown. However, when Matilda was older, she was taken back by her mother. The full circumstances aren't known. As a mother, Margaret was very strict.[4]

Margaret married Nathaniel Gunn on December 31, 1896.[5] They had no children together. In 1901, they lived at 20 Lyon Street in the district of Milton in Glasgow. She worked as a sewing machinist.[6] In 1911, they lived at 3 Cedar Street.[7]

Margaret had an interest in politics, and was involved in some capacity with the Labour party.[4]

She died on February 14, 1956 at the age of 80.[8]
