She was probably born at her parents' home of Letterewe in the Ross-shire parish of Gairloch in Scotland (map coordinates 57°41'07"N, 5°26'16"W) and was baptised on 23 October 1804.[1] Note that her entry in the baptismal register was made retrospectively and, based on another entry earlier on the same page, appears to have been made on or after December 1820.
