Mavis Hinemoa McKenzie MB BS was born on 22nd December 1908. She was the only surviving daughter and youngest child of Australian Salvation Army Officers, William McKenzie and Annie Hoepper. [1]
Like her parents, Mavis became a Salvation Army Officer.
She studied at the University of Sydney and graduated in 1941 as Bachelor of Medicine (MB) and Bachelor of Surgery (BS), becoming a medical doctor.
After marrying fellow medical doctor, Kingsley Mortimer, at Croydon, Surrey, England in 1944, [2] in 1948, the couple established a medical practice at 24 Wickateed Street, Wanganui, New Zealand. [3] Mavis and Kingsley became Salvation Army missionaries to Northern Rhodesia (Zambia); [4] later returning to New Zealand.
