James McKinney followed in the family tradition of fighting for his country. A short synopsis of his military life can be found in The Cornstalk Militia of Kentucky 1792-1811 by G. Glenn Clift. On page 112, Captain James McKinney is noted in the 6th Regiment - 13 Sep 1802. On page 186, he is found as a Major in the 2nd Battalion 63rd Regiment - 31 Dec 1811. It is written of his many battles against the "Red Man." Following the wars he removed to Missouri, from 1827 to 1832, he served as a Judge for Calloway County, Missouri.
At his residence in this Co. on the 2d inst., in the sixty ninth year of his age, Maj. James McKenney one of our oldest and best citizens. He lived a long and irreproachable life -- He was proverbial in his piety, independence, hospitality and all the qualities which mark the character of his native state, as well as that of the one in wich he so long resided.
Multiple unsourced family trees claim he married Levisa Whitley on 10 July 1798 at Lincoln Co, Kentucky, and they had 9 children.
