William McLean was born in Scotland.

William was born on 12 September 1854 at Murraygate, Dundee, Forfarshire, Scotland[1]. He was the son of Donald McLean and Helen McKinnon.

He was aged 2 when he emigrated with his mother and siblings leaving Liverpool on 5 December 1857 on the ship, Merchant Prince[2]. (Obviously there was an error in the listing of his names as Creighton.) He arrived on 14 March 1858 at Melbourne.

He married Harriet Elizabeth Ripkey on 12 February 1881[3] at the Wesleyan Church, Emerald Hill, South Melbourne. They had five children.

In 1914 he was an engine driver living at 392 Bay Street, Port Melbourne with his wife Harriet doing home duties, both registered on the Port Melbourne, Melbourne Ports Electoral Roll[14]. His children - Louisa a costumer, William James an engineer and Ruby a tailoress - were still living at home.

His wife died on 8 August 1923[15]. In 1924 he was at the same address[16]. His son Rupert an ice cream maker was living with him. At some stage he moved to live with his daughter Harriet Hague as in 1943 he was an engine driver living at 272 Dorcas Street, South Melbourne with her and her husband Harold a plumber[17].

William died on 31 January 1948 at his daughter's residence at 272 Dorcas Street[18] aged 93 years. The notice in the Melbourne newspaper said:

McLEAN.—On January 31, at his daughter's residence, 272 Dorcas street, South Melbourne, William beloved husband of the late Harriet McLean, and loving father of Harriet (Mrs. Hague, Bertha (Mrs. Lean, deceased), William, Ruby (Mrs. Classon), and Rupert, aged 93 years. (Cremated privately February 2.)

He was cremated privately on 2 February.
