The following obituary was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Border Watch, on 16 April 1902:[5]
Mrs. Rebecca (sic) Matheson, relict of the late Mr. James Matheson, of Buckland Park, and for many years a resident of the Mount Gambier district, died at the residence of her son, Mr. Simon Matheson, at Buckland Park, on Monday night. The late Mr. Matheson was one of the first shepherds in the employ of the late Dr. Browne, and a very early colonist. Relinquishing his station-work he took a farm at Yahl from Dr. Browne, which he carried on for a number of years. Then he sold out, and re-entered the services of Dr. Browne. He was manager of the Buckland Park estate for some years prior to his death, over 20 years ago. His son, Mr. Simon, succeeded him in the management, and Mrs. Matheson resided with him till her death. She was about 83 (sic) years of age. When resident in this district she was very highly respected. She leaves four sons and three or four daughters. A telegram intimating her decease was received yesterday morning by Mr. W. Williams, of the South Eastern Foundry.
