Biography of Daniel McLeod

Daniel McLeod is a member of Clan MacLeod.

Daniel was born about 1746 to Neill MacLeod and his first wife. He was the first son and had an older sister Mary. A brother Norman soon followed. Their mother died and their father remarried. The second wife bore Neil two sons; Alexander born 1762 and John born 1770. Their mother died. Their father decided to emigrate to North Carolina. Daniel's sister Mary was married and remained on the Isle of Skye.

Soon after Daniel married Martha McKinnon, they, his father, and three brothers came to what had been the American Colonies in 1777. The extended family landed in Wilmington, N.C., the place where so many of the Scotsmen landed. From there they took flat boats or barges up the Cape Fear River to Cross Creek where Fayetteville now stands. These boats were propelled by long poles at which the passengers took turn about. At Cross Creek they were met by their friends who had arrived there before them. Thus they were directed to a goodly land, stories of which had been told them in the Auld Countrie before they left their home.

Four years after emigrating to North Carolina in 1777, Daniel's two half brothers, Alexander and John, were sent by their father, Neill, to a neighbor's home, the Kenneth Clark place near Drowning Creek. Alexander was killed by Culp (tough leader of the Whig forces) and his men. This was known as the "Revenge of Piney Bottom."

The first US Census taken in 1790 shows the following named MacLeods as heads of households; Daniel MacLeod, John MacLeod, and Neill MacLeod who was listed as a literate nobleman.

Daniel passed away at the age of 93 years on February 7, 1839 in Little River Township, Cumberland County, North Carolina. He is buried in the McLeod Tuckahoe Cemetery in Cumberland County. His wife, Martha McKinnon, preceded him in death by thirteen years. The cemetery is now located on Ft. Bragg Military Reservation.

  • The Widowed Niell McLeod arrived in North Carolina earlier than the above family; he appears to have immigrated cr. 1777. His records are found in Cumberland County. Immigrating with him were four sons - Daniel (and his wife, Martha McKinnon), and Norman(no issue) who were the children of his first marriage and Alexander (died unmarried in the Revolutionary War) and John (had issue with Christina Clark) by his second. A daughter reportedly remained behind in Scotland having already married. Niell and three of his children moved on into Moore County to live on Horses' Creek (Pee Dee River Tributary) while Daniel and his family remained in Cumberland.
