Biography

James was born in 1862, a son of Benjamin McLeod and Catherine Bushen of Port Mouton, Nova Scotia[1] [2] in Port Mouton, Queens, Nova Scotia, though he grew up in Port Medway[3]

He was a master mariner, who worked on tow boats, lobster fishing and offshore fishing[3]

On November 30, 1885, he married Elizabeth Ann Bowers, a daughter of Peter and Ann Bowers of Liverpool, NS[4][3] [2] [5]

Children included:

  1. Theoda, born 1886, who died at 4 months[3]
  2. Nellie, born 24 August, 1888[2] who married William Joseph Quinn[6] [3]
  3. Eva May, born 27 October 1891[2][5], who married Arthur Wyburne Freeman of Milton[7] [3]
  4. James Harris "Harry" born 14 September 1894[2][5], who married Jennie Ramey, daughter of Artemus[8] [3]
  5. Mildred, born Oct 9, 1897[9][2][5], who married John Beverly Brannon[3]
  6. Russell, born Oct 9, 1899[2][5], who married Claire Freeman[3]
  7. Heber, born 15 April 1900[2][5] who married Elsie Wolfe[10] [3]
  8. Robert Malcolm Reed "Reed", born November 1, 1910[11] [5], who married Hilda Fields[12] and lived in Yarmouth[3]

Capt James McLeod was lost when the schooner 'Columbia' went down in a gale October 24, 1927[3]
